Constipation is nothing new…as I am sure most already have dealt with this either in yourself and/or you kiddo…Constipation is a common issue in children, BUT IT IS NOT NORMAL, and it can be frustrating and uncomfortable for them.

The Key Player aka THE VAGUS NERVE

When we look at why kiddos who are having issues with constipation or other digestive issues, we first must look at the vagus nerve! If you have not heard of the Vagus Nerve before, it actually means “wandering.” It comes directly off the brain stem and then it wanders throughout the body and into each organ. The Vagus nerve is a very big player when it comes to the digestive system. As well as many others along the spine. Constipation and irregular bowel movements, many times are related to spinal misalignments or subluxations. Subluxations or misalignments in the spine can affect the functioning of the nervous system, leading to digestive problems. The Vagus Nerve is very parasympathetic (rest and digest) driven and when we are stuck in the sympathetic nervous system, aka, the fight or flight system the Vagus Nerve slows down, therefore, not allowing the gastrointestinal system to function properly.

Chiropractors may use various techniques, such as gentle spinal manipulations or adjustments, to help realign the spine and improve the functioning of the nervous system. This, in turn, may help to alleviate digestive issues and improve bowel movements and function.

By performing spinal adjustments, chiropractors aim to restore normal nerve function and improve digestive function. When there is balance we are NOW able to function more in the parasympathetic side of the nervous system allowing the body and Vagus Nerve to work properly. When this happens one the first things we will see with kids and babies is a major “blow out,” yes…it is just as it sounds. From then on kiddos will begin to poop like God created and designed them to. It is all about that communication from the brain to the GI track and vice versa.

Here are some other things you can do at home while also being under chiropractic to help with constipation relief.

  1. Hydration: Encouraging your child to drink plenty of water can help prevent and relieve constipation. You can also offer them water rich foods, such as fruits and veggies.
  2. Fiber-rich foods: Incorporating high-fiber foods, such as whole grains, fruits, veggies, and legumes, into your child’s diet can help regulate bowel movements and relieve constipation.
  3. Physical activity: Encouraging regular physical activity, such as running, jumping, and playing, can help stimulate the muscles in your child’s intestines and promote bowel movements.
  4. Regular toileting habits: Establishing a regular toileting routine can help prevent constipation in children. Encourage your child to use the bathroom at the same time every day and not to hold their bowel movements.
These 4 above will only work if the nervous system is functioning properly after removing the interference through the chiropractic adjustment.

You want to make sure that you take your child to a trained pediatric chiropractor as they will be able to give the best care for your kiddo.

Many parents have reported positive results with the use of chiropractic care for digestive problems such as constipation and reflux.  Not only have parents seen the results but now the studies show the benefit of chiropractic for constipation.
